Challenge

In early 2022, before the league had announced a schedule, venues, or even a first event, SMT began collaborating with LIV Golf executives to help develop systems for a format that would be dramatically different from traditional golf tournaments.

The team-based competition, shotgun starts, amplified music, and an emphasis on fan engagement required SMT to rethink how scoring, data collection, and presentation would work. SMT needed to come up with a scoring and data ecosystem that could launch quickly, scale rapidly and operate without a defined calendar. SMT and LIV Golf aligned on a realistic, essential set of services that could support a potential June 2022 launch while allowing room to scale as the league evolved.

Solution

By April 2022, LIV Golf confirmed its debut event: June 6-8 at Centurion Club in London. Final player confirmations arrived just days before the tournament, featuring some of the biggest names in golf.

SMT went to work, deploying a six-person, on-site team, delivering:

  • Walking scoring with core statistical tracking
  • Real-time data feeds to broadcast and digital partners
  • Post-round reports for official media use
  • Individual and team HTML leaderboards developed by SMT’s e-media team

The event’s success established a strong operational foundation and immediately led to expanded service requests. As LIV Golf’s staff, fan base and vision grew, so did SMT’s role. What began as a single event evolved into full-season support across a rapidly expanding schedule that grew to eight events in 2023 and 14 events annually from 2023 through 2025.

 

SMT adapted its technological offerings to meet new requirements, often anticipating needs before they were fully defined. Enhancements included:

  • Live commentator screens for media
  • Full ball location tracking and course mapping
  • Expanded, hole-specific scoreboard production
  • Real-time weather and wind data for every stroke
  • Radar data integration for tee shots
  • Support for LIV promotions events
  • Deployment of SMT-managed private Wi-Fi networks

 

SMT’s proven reputation and deep knowledge of LIV Golf’s operations led to winning additional technology services, including IPTV and LED display production:

  • IPTV services for U.S. events in 2024
  • IPTV provider for all 14 LIV Golf events in 2025

 

IPTV services include:

  • TVs and mounting hardware
  • Network infrastructure
  • Eight encoded channels (broadcast, pre/post show, custom feeds)
  • Digital menu boards and sponsor wraps
  • Weather alert messaging
  • IP security cameras with mobile multi-view

 

LED display services for six 2025 U.S. LIV Golf events:

  • Nine 10’ x 18’ on-course scoreboards
  • Large-format displays for the practice range, first tee, and 18th green
  • Media center and ribbon boards
  • Expanded scopes for signature “party holes”

Results
