- Scoring and Data Collection
Challenge
The Open Championship presents significant challenges in managing and distributing vast amounts of real-time data for both on-course and broadcast applications. The primary obstacles include ensuring seamless connectivity across the entire course, providing accurate and timely updates for multiple scoreboards and integrating data efficiently for live broadcasts and digital platforms. Additionally, the need for extensive training and support for scorers using new technology adds complexity to the operational logistics.
Solution
SMT addresses these challenges through a comprehensive approach:
- Pre-Tournament Preparation: SMT’s team deploys wireless access points across all 18 holes well before the tournament begins. This infrastructure ensures robust connectivity for live scoring. Extensive training is provided to over 80 scorers, who are equipped with handheld devices to efficiently track shot details.
- Real-Time Data Management: During the tournament, SMT’s scoring cabin serves as the central hub for data collection and distribution. The cabin transmits scoring alerts to on-course manual scoreboard operators, digital leaderboards and broadcast partners like NBC and Sky Sports. SMT also provides the BrINT (Broadcast Interface) for NBC’s coverage, facilitating seamless integration of data into broadcast graphics.
- On-Course Technology: Digital leaderboards keep fans informed about player performance and GPS locations. These boards are designed to automatically update and trigger static leaderboards without disrupting play. SMT’s large monitor in the cabin enables real-time tracking of scoreboards and support staff, facilitating prompt issue resolution.
- Support for Manual Scoreboards: SMT provides devices with a supervisor app for the manual scoreboards on the 18th hole, tracking device battery levels and enabling accurate communication of scoring updates via the GolfX scoring system.
