Challenge
In 2024, SMT debuted its Tournament Management System during Wimbledon qualifying, marking its official role as the scoring provider for three of the four Grand Slam tournaments. In 2026, SMT took another step forward with the first live deployment of AutoStats at Wimbledon, bringing automated scoring, tracking and statistics together to create a more consistent and comprehensive data foundation.
Working closely with IBM and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), SMT delivers a seamless data ecosystem spanning scoring, statistics, tracking and broadcast graphics. The result is a powerful pipeline that supports storytelling across linear broadcast, digital streaming and on-site video boards while maintaining the precision and presentation expected at one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events.
Wimbledon’s tradition-rich brand presents a unique challenge: How do you integrate modern, stats-driven storytelling into a broadcast without disrupting the elegance and prestige of the event?
The goal is to deliver meaningful insights to fans and broadcasters without overwhelming the screen while ensuring that the data behind those insights is accurate, consistent, transparent and in real-time.
As tennis continues to embrace increasingly sophisticated tracking and analytics, another challenge has emerged: different tracking systems can produce data in different ways. Creating a consistent statistical language across matches and tournaments requires standardized definitions, reliable data processing and a single source of truth.
Solution
SMT’s Match Insights was designed to “bring data to life.” Debuting at Wimbledon in 2023 and expanded in 2024, the graphics package transforms raw statistics into visually rich, editorially relevant content that enhances the fan experience and informs commentary.
SMT’s Creative Studio created the visual identity of the Match Insights segments, blending informative storytelling with polished, Wimbledon-appropriate design. What sets Match Insights apart is its ability to look beyond the present match, at times functioning like a “tennis time machine” by connecting what is happening on court with player histories, previous rounds, past Grand Slams and historical rivalries.
In 2026, AutoStats added another dimension to that storytelling by automating the collection and processing of tennis scoring, tracking and statistics. Designed to serve as tennis’ single source of truth, AutoStats brings ball, player and limb tracking together in a unified solution.
At its foundation is SMT’s OASIS platform, which ingests data from multiple tracking vendors through SMT’s eventing engine, E.I.E.I.O. This allows SMT to normalize and standardize data across matches, regardless of the underlying tracking provider.
Statistical definitions are established by tennis experts before algorithms are built, with each definition fully disclosed so clients understand exactly how a statistic is derived. The result is objective, standardized data delivered in real time, providing a stronger foundation for the automated scoring, analytics and storytelling that power the modern tennis experience.
