SMT (SportsMEDIA Technology) is official scoring and results provider for the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games and also delivers multi-stadium videoboard productions and broadcast and streaming services.
The innovator in real-time data delivery and in-stadium– and broadcast–graphics solutions for sports and entertainment supports CrossFit’s entire season, which began in February with the CrossFit Open. Since 2011, SMT has worked side-by-side with the Games as it expands its fanbase and its roster of competitors vying for the title of “Fittest on Earth.”
The 17th iteration of the Games kicked off on Aug. 1 at the Alliant Center in Madison, WI, with 40 men, 40 women, 140 masters athletes, 40 teenage athletes, 40 teams, and 30 adaptive athletes from around the world in competition for $2.945 million in cash prizes.
SMT’s 17-person team arrived a week before the Opening Ceremony to set up production across three venues to help the estimated 50,000 athletes and spectators keep up with the competitions, navigate the grounds, and enjoy the Games. SMT’s Creative Studio created the graphics package for the boards, displaying schedules, lane assignments, live scores, results, competition standings, social media, sponsors, competition clock, and live video.
SMT Scoring Services
SMT’s results system captures the timing and scoring of the varied NOBULL CrossFit Games events and distributes the information in real time to media, displays, and the host site. SMT scoring solutions include scoring administration, ProChip Timing System, live repetition scoring, the data feed for the CrossFit website, and reports for each heat and standings.
SMT Broadcast Services
This year, ESPN returns as broadcaster for the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games. SMT’s top bar graphics will air on the CrossFit Games’ live stream on Games.CrossFit.com and in the CrossFit Games app as well as on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN+.
SMT Display Services
SMT produces the jumbo screens in Madison’s Coliseum and North Park venues. The Coliseum boasts four videoboards and four clock displays, as well as a ribbon board along one side. North Park has four clock displays showing start lists, live scores, event results, athlete profiles, standings, sponsor content, social-media posts, and scheduling. Venue and web-streaming commentators rely on SMT’s system for live timing, score, and results. SMT also provides the NGSC standings and schedule.
“CrossFit first approached SMT a dozen years ago with a challenge to create a scoring system that executes CrossFit’s ‘unknown and unknowable’ on-the-fly decisions and format changes,” says Tori Nachuk, operations manager, emerging sports, SMT. “SMT responded with a suite of products that showcases the world’s fittest athletes competing in events designed to push them to their absolute limits of strength, speed, and power. Every year as the competitions evolve, SMT adapts our systems to rise to the occasion.”
